Getting Ready to Work With Practice Clients

When you registered for this training I expressed my complete confidence that you would walk away with three things: A proven consulting process, the tools, and the confidence to identify ways your clients can turn their interests into income.

The best way to put this to the test is schedule a practice client.

Sue, Regina, and Leah have at least one practice client lined up. And still others are making plans to do so.

I love that so many people are taking immediate action! That tells me you’re serious about following through on a big commitment you made to yourself. Bravo!

If you have not yet found a practice client, I urge you to do so now. After all, we all know the longer we wait to apply any new knowledge or skills, the less likely we are to retain it.

In preparation for your practice session you’ll need to conduct a new client intake, send them their assignment, give them adequate time to reply, and then use their responses to prepare for the session.

Because so much of the work happens prior to meeting with the client, I urge you conduct the session no later than November 30th.

And if you need some help brainstorming ideas ahead of the consultation, the private Facebook page will be live until at least that date.

Marketing Moment

One of your fellow trainees found a creative way to find his first practice client – and attract paying clients at the same time.

When a local non-profit held a charity auction, Bill from Lincroft, NJ saw an opportunity and ran with it.

I’ll let Bill tell you in his own words.

A few days before the event, I emailed the 3 people organizing it to explain what my basket theme would be (part of me was wondering if they’d think I’m nuts – since the other families were donating baskets of wine, candy, etc.)

It was encouraging when 2 of them replied with “Wow.  Was that basket designed specifically for me?!” and “That’s Amazing! What a great idea!”

So, I printed a certificate for the consultation, a picture of the ebook cover and created the basket.  I placed both a 1-pg overview of what the PFYP basket is about and a 2-sided sign-up sheet (with room for 70 names) in front of the basket.

As Murphy’s Law would have it, they put a basket filled with Lottery tickets right next to mine…

About half way through the event, the Lottery ticket basket had lots of tickets…

Yet there were NO tickets in the jar for my basket.

Boy, did I have a case of Imposter Syndrome at that point…

However, my goal was to get 1 ticket in my basket.  That’s all I needed to get a practice client who WANTS what I have to offer!

I ended up with about 6 tickets in the basket, and the winner was thrilled to win it.  I spoke with her briefly, and we’ll have our intake phone call in the next few days! 

No one signed up for my mailing list, but that’s ok. 

As I was leaving, my son’s coach (who is a tough, no-nonsense type of guy. Not someone I would have guessed would be interested in PFYP) told me that he’d like to talk with me to learn more about this, and that he has a friend he’s going to get to talk with me as well! 

We’re planting seeds.

Donating a free session to a silent auction or other charity event is a great way to get exposure for your coaching. Best of all – it costs you nothing!

Cool Resources and Ideas You Might Have Missed

Facebook login pageA whopping 80 percent of students in the Fall program joined the private Facebook page. If you’re one, I hope you’ve enjoyed this lively exchange resources and ideas.

That’s where you’ll learn about cool resources and ideas like:

Changing Course’s own tech guru Lisa Tarrant shared a big sale happening on a website that helps you create great looking graphics for book covers and other information products

Food-BlogAnissa from France shared an article titled How to Start a Food Blog in 20 Minutes containing lots of helpful information regardless of what subject you or your future clients want to blog about

Kamin from California shared a great low-cost recorder for Mac Skype called Call Recorder. That way you can offer your clients the added-value benefit of receiving a recording of their session.

And Annie from New Zealand posted a link to an article on Solopreneurs with some really interesting findings like:

There are currently 17.9 million solopreneurs — full-time independent workers — in the U.S, up 12.5 percent since 2011. In addition, there are another 12.1 million ‘side-giggers,’ part-time independent workers who work less than 15 hours a week.

And that over 80 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with their choice to become solopreneurs. And with good reason. According to the study authors:

Solopreneurs choose this work style because they want control over their lives, including the ability to determine when and where they work and what type of work they do. Even though independent work has its challenges, most solopreneurs feel that the key advantages of independent work – control, autonomy and flexibility – far outweigh the challenges of working solo.

Marketing Moment

Findings like these matter because they offer additional confirmation that the work you’ve been training to do taps into what’s clearly a growing trend.

That’s why i highly recommend you read the entire article and note these and other findings to use on your website, in a future article or blog post, or otherwise use in attracting clients.

Frisbee-GuyFacebook is also where you learned about people like Gary Auerbach AKA the Frisbee Guy.

Gary’s a great example of some of the concepts we covered in Step 3 of the Profiting From Your Passion® formula. First he identified a keen interest (Frisbee) with a personal experience (winning the national championship).

Next Gary asked the question at the heart of Step 4: Who wants what I have?

Out of that came multiple profit centers. Today Gary makes a living putting on fun shows at schools, summer camps, and birthday parties, leading team building exercises for employees, and motivational speaking.

Facebook is also a great place for group brainstorming.

cupcake-makerLike this one to come up with ways a cupcake maker I met at the Ithaca New York farmer’s market could go from baking as a sideline to full-time business owner.

With fabulous autumn flavors like sweet potato with maple cream cheese frosting and spice cake with pumpkin buttercream frosting, success for this aspiring self-bosser will be extra sweet!

Dominika thought our cupcake maker should:

  • Offer gift certificates or gift baskets as prizes for local organizations’ charity events and raffles
  • Do Joint ventures with wedding planners, personalize a wedding, rehearsal dinner, other wedding-related special event

Leah turned the group onto the Food Network show Cupcake Wars (who knew!) then went wild with these and other ideas:

  • Partner with restaurants and sell them there or at high-end coffee shops. A friend of mine did that with her cheese cakes.
  • Sell them to the restaurant by the dozen and the restaurant could sell them by the cupcake to the customer.
  • Sell at local wine, craft, and food festivals or just festivals (in this case maybe a Fall or pumpkin festival) have food vendors that set up all kinds of concession-type stands. I hope this helps!
  • Rent a van and make cupcake deliveries like pizza delivers.
  • Sometimes hotels and merchandisers are looking for cupcake designers to help with a themed display. She could try a few displays and take pictures and perhaps send them out to hotels and marketing companies. Also, she could send her portfolio pictures out to events planners to create displays for retirements, birthday celebrations, and family reunions

Finally, in Class 14 you learned how to help your clients by tapping into the power of “Things You Happen to Know.”

Turns out, Annie just happens to have some experience that could help our cupcake maker, posting:

I recently surprised one of our son’s (and all his classmates) on his 21st birthday with 21 cupcakes – this lady could ship birthday parcels – 10 cupcakes for ten years etc. for children of any age, in a color or flavor theme.

Don’t you love it when people who never met one another reach out across space and time to get – and give – advice? It’s so inspiring!

It’s this kind of support and encouragement that enables everyone to achieve our goals more quickly than you could on your own.

And as the eight-week course comes to a close, your future goals are exactly what you should be thinking about right now. In other words…

Where Do You Go Next?

Where you go next largely depends on who you are and what you personally need.

A Word About the Power of Commitment

In the unlikely event we do not get enough members to fill a given time slot, your registration will not be processed and you will owe nothing.
